In residence: "Father’s Letters" directed and written by Alexey Evstigneev

Inspired by a true story, the poignant story of Father’s Letters settles at Ciclic animation for several months of residency.

Alexey Evstigneev was born and raised in Shatura, Russia. He studied documentary filmmaking at the Russian film school VGIK, in the department headed by Viktor Lisakovich and Alexej Geleyn. He has participated, among others, in the IDFA Talent Campus, the Visions du réel laboratory and the Talent Campus of the Fajr International Film Festival. He directs documentaries and animated films. He directed The Track in 2019 and The Golden Buttons in 2020.
With Father’s Letters, Alexey tells the story of men who have endured from age to age the madness of their masters and he deals with this legacy from a broken generation. Alexey also talks about transmission and resilience.

This film, produced by Mimesis Productions & Moderato, received support for the production of Ciclic-Région Centre-Val de Loire. Alexey Evstigneev, will be in residence from October 10th to April 7th, 2023.

In 1934, Professor Wangenheim is sent to the Gulag on the Solovetsky islands. From there, he sents letters to his daughter Eleonora for years until his death, inventing stories about being a traveler explorer and not a «traitor to the motherland» and family.
